The Itasca Lions are proud to continue the tradition of the Christmas Luminary, which in Itasca, was started back in 1960 by Boyd and Barbara Hindman. The tradition of candle lit bags lining the walkways and streets on Christmas Eve is symbolic of the “Lighting of the Christ Child’s way home”. Originally, it was just the Hindman’s and their neighbors who displayed the luminaries but as other Itascans recognized the beauty and symbolism of the lighted bags, more and more neighbors joined in. Boyd Hindman, a Past-President of the Itasca Lions Club, passed away in 1972 and Barbara continued to distribute the luminaries by herself. By 1975 the luminaries numbered in the thousands and the Lions of Itasca took over the distribution. In March of 1997, Barbara Hindman also passed away. The beauty and the spirit that she and Boyd introduced to Itasca back in 1960 will continue as long as caring neighbors make Itasca a unique and wonderful place to live.
